Place a test order
Updated October 2, 2026
A test order shows you exactly what customers and your kitchen will see. It takes two minutes and avoids surprises on opening day.
Before you start
Tell your team a test order is coming so nobody prepares it. The easiest test uses Pay at counter, which never charges a card.
Place the order
- Open your live site in a separate browser tab or on your phone.
- Add a few items, including one with customizations so you can check how they appear.
- Go to checkout and choose Pickup, then Takeaway.
- Choose Pay at counter as the payment method.
- Enter a name and phone number, then place the order.
Check each screen
- Orders page: the order appears with a token number badge. Open it and confirm the items, customizations and notes are right.
- Kitchen Display: the order shows in the New column and a chime plays if sound is on.
- Move it along: bump it through Preparing and Ready, and confirm the customer's tracking page updates.
- Clean up: open the order and cancel it so it doesn't count as a real sale.
Test card payments and delivery
Square is connected to your real Square account, so a card test is a real charge. Pay with your own card for a small order, then refund it straight away from the order. See How refunds work. To test delivery without dispatching a real courier, connect Uber Direct with Sandbox credentials first, and switch to Production when you're ready. If you do test with a live connection, cancel the delivery before a courier is assigned.
Warning: A card test charges the card for real, and a live Uber Direct connection can dispatch a real courier. Refund test charges and cancel test deliveries straight away.
